Itaca, the swimsuits

What if we bring in the sun?

This year he’s playing hide-and-seek with the clouds, but it doesn’t matter: in a few days he’ll appear and we’ll be ready!

Do you remember Naïade, the swimsuit for girls released last year?

patron de couture, guillaume esteve, patron de maillot de bain, maillot de bain, swimming pool, sewing pattern, lycra, natation, bain, plage, nageur, deux pièces, une pièce, patron etoffe malicieuse

As you probably saw on my Instagram story last summer, I worked for this year on the women’s version.

Je suis très excitée et fière de vous présenter le dernier modèle de maillot de bain d’Etoffe Malicieuse…

ITACA

PDF pattern available from 32 to 50

Itaca is thus in the continuity of Calypso woman, but also of Naïade.

I hesitated to call it “Naïade femme”, but as it has a “1 piece” version that Naïade does not offer, it was named Itaca!

The Itaca pattern is obviously quite different from the Naïade pattern as it has been drafted to suit women:

  • The swimsuit top has bonings on the sides to prevent sagging (however, these are optional for smaller breasts: in the photos in the rest of this article the swimsuits have been sewn without bonings) ;
  • There’s optional foam cups: these will be removable so you’ll be able to put them on and off according to your desires!
  • There is also an elastic band under the chest to keep it in place. I also drafted a “half circle” opening on the center front.

This drop is very nice especially on the “one piece”: it lightens the design of the swimsuit.

As usual, the patterns offer size layers: you choose the size(s) to print according to your needs.

You also choose if you want to print the pattern with or without seam allowances.

In short, everything has been carefully thought out so that you will have great pleasure in sewing!

Are you ready for the show?

Two-piece version

Personally, except at the pool to do laps, in summer I prefer the two-piece.

So it is quite naturally the first version that I reveal to you!

This swimsuit was sewn in a beautiful lycra from Tissus.net.

Like last year, I have a little article coming out in the next few days to help you find the fabric of your dreams.

In this version of Itaca, I had fun with the flounces. They are optional: you can see from the diagrams at the beginning of this article that each version can be sewn with or without flounces. The advantage of handmade is that you decide exactly what you like or not!

The panties are the Délice model: the flounce comes back in a point on the center front to remind the flounce of the top of the swimsuit.

Swimsuit bottoms and tops are sold separately. So if you prefer panties or shorties, you can sew exactly what you want!

Unlike Naïade where the panties have frills, Délice has flounces: these have been calculated to bring just the right amount of feminine touch!

The flounces of the straps come back to the back which closes with a clasp.

Here, the straps are sewn to the back “vertically”.

You can also tie them in the neck (without the flounces : see the “1 piece” version), or cross them…

The top of the swimsuit has a small opening in the middle: I think it lighten the model.

Thanks to the elastic band under the breast, you will get a good support. This is especially important for large breasts.

One-piece version

You know what I like best about this version? It’s the bare back!

The one piece version is slightly faster to sew than the two piece.

As for Calypso, you will find in the download file an adaptation sheet that will allow you to adapt the length of the bust according to your morphology.

Always in the adaptation sheet that will be delivered with the pattern, you will find all the necessary explanations to obtain the leg height you prefer.

This version has been sewn without flounces on the straps, for simplicity!

Do you recognize the lycra? It’s the same one I used last year to sew Calypso asymmetrical style.

In this photo, I’ve added foam cups so you can see for yourself. I remind you that these are removable.

If you are not yet familiar with the specifics of the Étoffe Malicieuse patterns, here are more details on the pattern:

What’s in the download:

Étoffe Malicieuse is here to guide you as closely as possible to your expectations.

That why, the folder you will download contains several documents:

  • An interactive instructions booklet illustrated with numerous clear diagrams (to find out more, click HERE)
  • The pattern in A4/US letter format that you can print directly at home.

The pattern is given with AND without seam allowances. Thanks to the layer system, you can choose!
If you choose to print the pattern without seam allowances, everything is carefully explained in the booklet to add the seam allowances according to the finishes techniques you want to use.

Please note: for lingerie, very few sheets are required. So don’t be afraid to cut and assemble the pattern: it will be very quick to do!

The size lines are made up of different colours, but also different line styles, so you can print in black and white without any worries!

The patterns are layered which allow you to choose which sizes you want to print.

You can read the article about this specificity of the Étoffe Malicieuse patterns HERE.

There is also a short video that will show you how to use layers is available on the Youtube channel: Étoffe Malicieuse channel

  • A “printing the pattern” helper

This part will tell you how to use the layers, how to set up your printer, which pages to print according to the chosen variant…

  • A “Stitches and settings” section

This part of the explanations will detail the different stitches used in swimsuit sewing.

As the construction progresses, you will also find the small tag giving you indications on which stitch to use.

Sewing level

Contrary to popular belief, all you need is a simple sewing machine with a zig-zag stitch.

The construction instructions have been written as clearly as possible. They will guide you step by step with the help of numerous clear diagrams to enable even total beginners to sew their panties.

Oasis is a project that everyone can get on. Once again, it is a matter of trusting yourself and daring to take the plunge!

Tested!

As usual, the pattern has been tested, the explanations have been read and re-read…

For this pattern, beginners in swimsuit sewing were called in (as always), as well as seamstresses more accustomed to sewing.

A big thank you to this great team of testers! THANK YOU for your help!
