Supporter, the sport bra [Presentation article]

Hello to everyone!

If you only knew how much fun I had with this new pattern: I had so many ideas for variations in my head, and I really enjoyed coming up with them.

Supporter is a sports bra. It has 4 versions: a basic version (with two depths of cleavage), a version with rounded cutouts, a version with overlays and a version with thin straps.

It’s a quick pattern to sew, and has only a few pieces.

Supporter, the sport bra

Patterns available from 32 to 50

(for a bust measurement that goes from 76 cm to 116 cm)

The basic version

This version is very simple. Efficient and quick to sew, it will be perfect for a first approach of the pattern.

The swimmer’s back has the advantage of having a shape that holds well in place: no straps that fall on the shoulders!

Armholes are finished with a FOE.

Supporter’s construction has been thought out so that no seam allowances are visible on the inside of the bra: it looks as good on the right side as on the wrong side.

The basic version has two possible necklines. Here, it is the lower neckline.

For each variation of the bra you can add foam cups to add volume.

The version with cut-outs

This variation will allow you to play with different fabrics.

For the basic version, there are two different neckline heights.

So that you can see the difference between the two: on the picture below the black lycra corresponds to the lowest neckline and the red striped lycra corresponds to the “basic” neckline:

On the back of this variant, we can find the cutouts :

I hesitated for a long time to offer you a version with a hook & eye in the back.

You should know that this version is very easy to modify to add a hook and eye. If there are several of you who are interested, I will provide a tutorial. However, be aware that a clasp in the back can be uncomfortable for fitness or yoga positions where you are lying on your back.

For the underbust band, I propose two possible finishes.

A “standard” method and a method with no visible seam allowances on the wrong side of the bra (for all versions of Supporter, the construction allow you to obtain bras without any visible seam allowances!)

The version below was supposed to be a test…

It turned out so pretty that I insisted on having it photographed!

The floral fabric is a scuba and comes from Mondial Tissu.

The back is in powermesh.

The burgundy FOE matches the scuba’s flowers and brings some color to the bra.

The version with overlays

This model will still allow you to play with different textures and colors:

The construction was thought in such a way that the mesh part is not transparent on the front:

On the other hand, it is quite transparent on the back to let discover the game of superposition:

Supporter gets along perfectly with Nolina, the legging that came out a… a long time ago! I had presented it in jersey, so here it is in lycra:

This Supporter variant is simple when viewed from the front…

… it is from the back that she is the prettiest!

The straps cross each other to form a diamond shape.

On the front, we find the base of the double straps:

I sewed Nolina’s waistband leggings in the same lycra as the bra to create a set.

For this picture, I slipped inside Supporter two foam cups.

Sewing level

Contrary to what you might think, all you need is a simple sewing machine that has a zig-zag stitch (or even better an elastic stitch).

The assembly instructions have been written as clearly as possible. They will guide you step by step with the help of many computerized diagrams to allow beginners to sew their bra.

The photographs were taken by Fabrice, except for the thin straps version.
