Lengthen or shorten Marin, the swim trunks [Tutorial]

Marin was planned with a leg length that should reach just above the knee.

But maybe you prefer a longer leg? Or shorter?

This article will explain how to proceed to adapt the pattern to your preference.

All you need is a pencil, a ruler, a sheet of paper, a pair of scissors and some tape.

Each adaptation must be made on the pattern without the seam allowances (every Etoffe Malicieuse patterns can be printed with or without seam allowances).

1. To shorten Marin’s swim trunks

Start by drawing two lines parallel to each other and perpendicular to the grainline (indicated on the pattern by a double arrow).

These two lines should be spaced the height you want to remove along the length of the shorts.

Cut along the lines to remove the shaded part of the diagram.

You get 4 pieces: 2 upper parts and 2 lower parts.

Tape the tops to a sheet of paper tucked under the patterns.

Draw a line through the extension of the sides (in red on the diagram).

Placing them well against the red line, now tape the two lower parts that are to be glued to the upper parts.

Redraw the crotch area (in red on the diagram).

Now all you have to do is cut out your new pattern pieces!

2. To lengthen Marin the swimming trunks

Start by drawing a line perpendicular to the grainline (indicated on the pattern by a double arrow). Draw it about halfway down the crotch.

Cut out the pattern: you get 4 pieces: 2 upper parts and 2 lower parts.

Tape the tops to a piece of paper and draw a line spaced the height you want to add to the length of the shorts (indicated by L on the diagram).

Draw a line through the extension of the sides (in red on the diagram).

Tape the bottom parts along the line, making sure to place them against the red lines.

Draw the new crotch (in red on the diagram).

Now all you have to do is cut out your new pattern pieces!

Did you see that? It’s really not that difficult! And now you can adjust your swim shorts according to YOUR wishes (or those of your son/husband/uncle/cousin/nephew…).
